Murphy: Trump administration focused on 'stealing from all of us'

Date:

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), who has emerged as one of his party’s loudest critics of the Trump administration, said the newly elected executive branch is focused on “stealing from all of us.”

“The Trump administration has been about one thing and one thing only: stealing from all of us, stealing from regular people, stealing from poor people, stealing from the middle class in order to enrich their billionaire Mar-a-Lago cabal,” Murphy said in a clip posted to the social platform X by the Daily Caller on Tuesday.

Murphy’s remarks touched on the tech leaders aligned with President Trump, most notably Elon Musk, the Tesla CEO who is the leader of the Department of Government Efficiency and has frequently been at the president’s side.

At Trump’s inauguration last month, tech leaders including Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew made notable appearances.

Over the past year, Musk has grown close with Trump, heavily backing him in his effort to return to the White House and appearing at some of his rallies. The tech billionaire has also been heavily involved in Trump’s second administration as a senior adviser to the president.

Murphy, whose public remarks have stirred talk of a potential presidential bid in 2028, in the clip also slammed a budget resolution House Republicans adopted.

That resolution calls for the House Energy and Commerce Committee to find $880 billion in spending cuts, which likely would need to come from changes to Medicaid given the size of the cuts.

“You’re talking about $880 billion of cuts to Medicaid. And I get it, like $880 billion, like, what does that mean, right? That’s a huge number. Nobody understands. Let me tell you what that means. That means that sick kids die in this country. That means that hospitals in depressed communities, in rural communities, close their doors,” Murphy said.

The Hill has reached out to the White House and the House Republican Conference for comment.
