The head of the U.S. military base in Greenland, Col. Susannah Meyers, was fired after distancing herself from the Trump administration.
On Thursday evening, the U.S. military’s Space Operations Command announced that Meyers was removed from her position as commander of the Pituffik Space Base due to a “loss of confidence in her ability to lead.”
“Commanders are expected to adhere to the highest standards of conduct, especially as it relates to remaining nonpartisan in the performance of their duties,” the statement said.
WHY TRUMP IS LIKELY SO INTERESTED IN GREENLAND
The news comes after Meyers separated herself from Vice President JD Vance’s March visit to Greenland in an email to base personnel obtained by Military.com. The email dampened the Trump administration’s goal of deepening ties or even acquiring Greenland, which Vance touched on during his trip to the Arctic island.
Meyers wrote in the email that she “spent the weekend thinking about Friday’s visit — the actions taken, the words spoken, and how it must have affected each of you.”
“I do not presume to understand current politics, but what I do know is the concerns of the U.S. administration discussed by Vice President Vance on Friday are not reflective of Pituffik Space Base,” Meyers wrote in the email after Vance criticized Denmark for “underinvesting” in its semiautonomous territory and leaving it vulnerable to malign foreign actors such as China and Russia.

Defense Department spokesman Sean Parnell appeared to suggest in a post to X that Meyers’s conduct led to her firing.

“Actions to undermine the chain of command or to subvert President Trump’s agenda will not be tolerated at the Department of Defense,” he wrote.
Space Force said Col. Shawn Lee had replaced Meyers.
