As part of a broader effort to rid the Pentagon of “weak leadership” and inaction, the Trump administration has ousted a senior NATO official, whose firing was previously suggested by a conservative research group.

Navy Vice Admiral Shoshana Chatfield was reportedly fired from NATO’s military committee over the weekend. She was the first woman to oversee the Naval War College, a position she held until 2023.
In addition to leading a joint reconstruction team in Afghanistan, Chatfield was a Navy helicopter pilot and one of the 32 members of NATO’s military committee.
On Tuesday, Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell announced that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth “removed U.S. Navy Vice Admiral Shoshana Chatfield from her position as U.S. representative to NATO’s military committee, due to a loss of confidence in her ability to lead,” according to a statement released.
According to the Associated Press, which cited authorities, Chatfield received a call from Adm. Christopher Grady, the acting chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff — informing her that the administration wished to take the position on a different path.
Additionally, in a previous letter to Hegseth, the conservative research group American Accountability Foundation (AAF) listed 20 officers and admirals that it claimed were overly preoccupied with DEI and other left-wing initiatives.
Chatfield was one of eight women who made the list, which stated that concentrating on such measures is a hindrance to national security. Chatfield was also included on the list partly because of a 2015 speech, in which she lamented that 80% of the House of Representatives’ members were men, while declaring that “our diversity is our strength.”
According to the group, she also cited a slide from a presentation from the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute that highlighted the statement: “Investing in gender equality and women’s empowerment can unlock human potential on a transformational scale.”
Both Hegseth and President Trump have been outspoken in their assertions that “woke” policies are no longer relevant in this new administration.
According to NATO, the panel serves as the main source of military guidance for the Nuclear Planning Group and the North Atlantic Council. It acts as a conduit between NATO’s military organization and its political decision-makers.
