Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) said he believes the Democratic Party has become out of touch with working Americans.
Bennet joined NBC News’s Kristen Welker for “Meet the Press” on Sunday, where he was asked about California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s (D) recent comments calling the Democratic Party toxic.
“I do agree that the … Democratic Party brand is really problematic,” Bennet said.
Bennet noted that “with all respect” to Newsom, the Democratic Party has become associated with the educated coastal elites of California and New York and “not anymore with working people in this country.”
“The good news is for the party, I think, is that Donald Trump is pursuing some of the same trickle-down economics that he pursued the first time he was president, to get to make sure that he … can create, again, the tax cuts for the wealthiest people in the united States,” Bennet said.
Bennet argued the Democratic Party needs to make an argument about why its members would be better leaders than President Trump for a variety of reasons.
Since its brutal election losses, the Democratic Party has been at odds over legislation, messaging and its direction.
“If the Democratic Party would show up with some imagination, I think not only would we do better, the American people would do better,” Bennet said.
