Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO) argued that President Donald Trump will succeed in the legal battles at odds with his vision for the nation, arguing this is not the same as when former President Joe Biden was “overstepping” his presidential power.
Schmitt claimed that the law is on the Trump administration’s side in its legal feud over deporting illegal immigrants, citing how “the apex” of a president’s power lies in the “congressionally-delegated authority on immigration policy” within the commander-in-chief’s core functions. He added that this is different from Biden “overstepping his authority” in issuing debt forgiveness on student loans or in mandating the COVID-19 vaccine.
“So the president’s operating well within his authority,” Schmitt stated on Fox News’s Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo. “I think as these cases make their way through the appellate courts, and ultimately the Supreme Court, he’ll be vindicated and be able to deliver on the promises he made to the American people.”
Many Republican lawmakers have sided with the Trump administration over Trump’s use of the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, in which a judge temporarily blocked the administration from using it to deport illegal immigrant gangs, such as Tren de Aragua. Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN), for instance, got into a viral feud on cable news when he argued the president was in the right against the “activist” judge.
Schmitt also addressed the United States’s bid to strengthen its military, predicting that the 21st century will be defined by “who wins this great power competition” between the U.S. and China. As such, Schmitt applauded Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for taking on this challenge, in which he said China views the last 150 years as “a great humiliation” in its bid to win.
The president just announced that the U.S. Air Force will move forward to acquire the “world’s first sixth-generation fighter jet,” named the F-47, with Trump promising it will be the “most lethal aircraft ever built.” Schmitt detailed how the F-47 will “see further ahead” and be more stealthier than the U.S.’s previous aircrafts.

“So if we make those investments and we’re serious about it, we can win this great competition, but we can’t be lackadaisical about it,” Schmitt argued. “We have to continue to modernize. We have to have procurement reform so we can be more nimble in what we produce, because the battlefield changes quicker now than it ever has before.”
National security advisor Mike Waltz stated on Saturday that Trump recognizes the U.S.’s rivalry with China is “the competition of this century,” and is taking the necessary steps to meet it.
