Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) weighed in on President Trump recently complimenting him for voting to advance the GOP-backed government funding bill, saying the commander in chief is “trying to confuse people.”
“He was trolling me,” Schumer told “The View” co-host Joy Behar during his Tuesday appearance on the morning show. “I know this guy.”
“He’s trying to confuse people. He always tries to confuse people. He tries to hide what he does, and by the way, that’s another — you know, we, we Democrats are fighting them very hard,” Schumer said.
Schumer, the Democrats’ long-time Senate leader, turned heads in Washington last week after saying Thursday on the Senate floor that he would vote to shepherd ahead the six-month continuing resolution (CR). The senate minority leader called the CR a “very bad” bill but cautioned that a potential government shutdown would give Trump and billionaire senior adviser Elon Musk “carte blanche to destroy vital government services at a significantly faster rate than they can right now.”
The following morning, Trump took to Truth Social to praise Schumer “for doing the right thing,” despite the heavy pushback the New York senator received from Democrats in Congress and activists on the ground.
“Took ‘guts’ and courage! The big Tax Cuts, L.A. fire fix, Debt Ceiling Bill, and so much more, is coming. We should all work together on that very dangerous situation,” Trump wrote. “A non pass would be a Country destroyer, approval will lead us to new heights.”
Ultimately, the Senate passed the six-month CR with a 54-46 vote Friday, with only Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), and Angus King (Maine), an independent who caucuses with Democrats, voting for the measure from the Democratic Party conference.
Schumer said on “The View” that Democrats from both congressional chambers are “going to all different parts of their states and districts, talking about how bad the Medicaid cut would be.”
“Take that money away from people, average folks and give to the very wealthy. God Almighty, these guys are rich enough. God bless them, they don’t need more money,” Schumer said. “But they are so greedy, but wait — he tries to hide all this. He tries to hide all this by talking about Greenland or changing the name to the ‘Gulf of America.’ This is another way of him trolling.”
