President Donald Trump announced that he has ordered an additional 25% tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum imports Tuesday after the neighboring country charged Americans 25% more for electricity in three border states.

The tariff will go into effect Wednesday morning, and bring the total U.S. levy on Canadian steel and aluminum up to 50%. Trump also called for Canada to eliminate their 250% to 390% tariff on American dairy products.

The announcement by the 47th president comes after Ontario Premier Doug Ford slapped a 25% surcharge on energy exports to the Canadian province’s three U.S. state customers: New York, Michigan and Minnesota. Ford has also threatened to cut off the exports.

“I will shortly be declaring a National Emergency on Electricity within the threatened area. This will allow the U.S to quickly do what has to be done to alleviate this abusive threat from Canada,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“If other egregious, long time Tariffs are not likewise dropped by Canada, I will substantially increase, on April 2nd, the Tariffs on Cars coming into the U.S. which will, essentially, permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business in Canada.”

This comes after Trump said Monday that Canada was a “tariff abuser” and that the U.S. will get all their money back from its neighboring country on April 2nd.

“Despite the fact that Canada is charging the USA from 250% to 390% Tariffs on many of our farm products, Ontario just announced a 25% surcharge on ‘electricity,’ of all things, and your (sic) not even allowed to do that,” Trump raged on Truth Social late Monday.

“Because our Tariffs are reciprocal, we’ll just get it all back on April 2,” Trump said, of when his tariff plan kicks off.

Meanwhile, Trump is planning to enforce more tariffs on imports from across the globe, including Japan and the European Union, in early April.
