Democrats take aim at Musk, DOGE by recruiting government whistleblowers

Date:

Senate Democrats launched an online form on their website for public servants to report cases of the Trump administration acting out of line, particularly regarding the conduct of the Department of Government Efficiency, which is run by Elon Musk

“Whistleblowers are a vital part of Congressional oversight to hold the administration accountable,” says the description of the online form.

Senate Democrats sent a letter to public servants in which they cited the Whistleblower Protection Act, which would make it safe for public servants to report the Trump administration or DOGE for abusing their power, according to a copy obtained by the Washington Post.

WHAT IS DOGE? WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF GOVERNMENT EFFICIENCY

“As Senate Republicans refuse to fulfill their constitutional duty to provide a check on the Executive Branch, Senate Democrats remain steadfast in our commitment to uncovering the truth,” Democrats wrote. “We are prepared to issue demand letters, preserve public records, conduct public hearings, and pursue legal action where necessary.”

Democrats have been raising red flags about DOGE and Musk’s actions in slashing government spending, with some lawmakers saying the world’s richest man may be acting without any checks and balances.

“The way that Elon Musk is just, I think, getting out ahead of the president’s skis, and is just going in there and moving fast and aggressively, raising concerns and questions of ‘Is this legal? Is this not legal?’ is creating a headache for the president’s agenda on an issue that otherwise would be ripe for bipartisan work,” Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME) told the Washington Post

On Friday, President Donald Trump announced Russell Vought was confirmed to lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. He assisted in writing Project 2025, which also called for the elimination of the bureau. Just hours before Trump’s announcement, Musk took to X to share that he intended to shut down the bureau.

“CFPB RIP,” Musk posted, along with an emoji of a tombstone.

Last week, Democrats protested Musk’s actions in front of many government buildings. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) said, “Elon Musk is seizing power from the American people,” while outside the Treasury Department. Other protesters outside of the Office of Personnel Management chanted, “Hey, hey, ho, ho! Elon Musk has got to go!”

Democratic district attorneys have also targeted Musk and DOGE’s actions, and a federal judge sided with them, blocking DOGE from accessing personal data from the Treasury Department. The Department of Justice has asked the court to lift the ruling.

The White House designated Musk a “special government employee” and has said he has “abided by all applicable federal laws.”
