Unburdened by what has not been: Expensive beer, guacamole, and a trade war that wasn’t

Date:

Fire. Brimstone. Locusts. Plagues. Expensive avocados and Mexican beer.

This was to be the fallout from President Donald Trump’s imposed tariffs on Mexico and Canada. It was going to be the end of the world as we know it, and people in the country wouldn’t be able to afford guacamole for the Super Bowl. That was the messaging from Democrats, especially Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).

And, as per usual, it was all dishonest, baseless, hyperbolic hysteria. While Schumer clutched his pearls and participated in the latest fearmongering by congressional Democrats, Trump spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to discuss ways both countries could enhance their border security efforts.

In the end, Trump was right and Schumer was wrong.

“I just had a good call with President Trump,” Trudeau said in a social media post. “Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan — reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology, and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl. Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are and will be working on protecting the border.”

Schumer was left with avocado and Corona beer props he used for a press conference outside the Capitol, and Trump was getting Trudeau to pledge billions of dollars in border security upgrades and Sheinbaum reinforcing the U.S.-Mexico border with 10,000 members of the country’s national guard. Trudeau also announced that Canada would commit to appointing a fentanyl czar, categorize cartels as terrorists, and fund a “new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl” with $200 million.

Crisis averted, at least for a month. Trump announced the tariffs would be delayed for 30 days as a sign of good faith by his administration to give Mexico and Canada time to uphold their pledges and do more to secure the border. It was a win for Trump’s diplomacy and represented a stark contrast in gravitas between the president and the Democrats. Schumer and his fellow left-wing politicians prioritized theatrics, scare tactics, and doomsday prognostications; Trump prioritized border security and protecting the citizens of the country.

Schumer’s folly is just the latest political failure by Democrats, who have been arguably overwhelmed and outfoxed by the president and his administration. The Senate minority leader’s attempt to influence public opinion against Trump’s tariffs was rather pathetic. For someone who has spent decades in office, Schumer’s schtick was sophomoric and amateur. It was emblematic of a political party in decline — and one with no direction or purpose at the moment.

In 2025, the only thing Democrats stand for is “Trump’s bad.” But while they demonize and vilify, Trump is upholding the promises he made during his campaign. He vowed to make America great again and has worked to do so every day since Jan. 20. With each action he takes to reshape the government and the country to fit his vision, he embarrasses Democrats at every turn.

Democrats are about fear, division, hatred, and theatricality. Trump is about getting the job done.
